Why is Walter so angry with Soraya and Brent for making the pre-calls to the hotel managers and deputies? Walter is a very controlling manager, and feels that he has lost control over a critical aspect of a high-profile project, at an early stage in its delivery, and publicly at that. Brent and Soraya’s actions have set the wheels in motion before he is ready to do so, even if only by a week or so. He feels that he has potentially lost credibility with some of the hotel managers and deputies because, although he bluffed well enough, it was obvious to those he spoke with that he didn’t know the pre-calls had been made by members of his own department. He is worried that the managers and deputies he spoke with won’t waste much time telling other managers and deputies about this interesting development in the Innovations Team. Whether they will or not is not the issue. He fears they will and this makes him angry. His anger is partly because he realizes that he should have thought of making the calls himself and didn’t, and is partly because, by the sound of it, the way Soraya and Brent have positioned the roll out with the few managers he has spoken with was excellent. He is embarrassed that he didn’t know anything about their calls and, secretly, while he realizes he is overreacting, he also fears that unless he comes down hard on both of them, they will in future try something like this – or worse – undermining him further still.
